What is Labor Day?

Labor Day is the first Monday in September in the United States and Canada, so it falls between the 1st and the 7th. Congress made it a federal holiday in 1894, days after the Pullman strike ended, and picked September rather than the international 1 May date. It functions as the close of the American summer: schools return around it, and the long weekend is one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Most of the world marks workers on 1 May instead.
