How to use the life calendar
Enter your birthdate and the grid fills in. Each square is one week, each row is one year, and the whole block is ninety years. The teal squares are behind you, the amber one is the week you are in right now, and everything grey is still unwritten. Nothing is sent anywhere: the date lives in this browser and the drawing is done on your own machine.
The layout comes from Tim Urban, who published it on Wait But Why as a wall calendar for a human life. The idea is not new. Writing about the shortness of life is at least as old as Seneca, and memento mori has been a genre for centuries. What the grid adds is that it is countable. A vague sense that time is passing changes nothing. Four thousand six hundred and eighty small squares, most of them still empty, changes what you do on Saturday.
Reading it without spiralling
Keep it light. This is the same mechanism as the visual timers elsewhere on this site: a countdown you can see behaves differently from a countdown you merely know about, because a finite visible quantity gets spent more carefully. The point of the grid is not dread, it is arithmetic. If you see your parents twice a year and they are seventy, the number of remaining visits is small enough to write down, and once it is written down you tend to book a third trip.
Look at the rows, not the total. A row is a year, and a year is fifty two squares wide, which is enough room for a language, a manuscript, or a serious change of direction. Most people overrate what a week holds and underrate what a row holds.
Printing it and keeping it
Use Download as PNG for a file you can set as a wallpaper, or Print for a clean sheet on white paper. A printed grid on the wall works better than a browser tab, because the whole benefit depends on seeing it without deciding to look at it. Reprint it once a year on your birthday and fill in the row by hand if you prefer the ritual.
Ninety is a round number, not a forecast. It sits above the average life expectancy in most countries and below the record, so it makes the grid a container rather than a prediction.
