Pomodoro vs the 52/17 method

Two popular intervals with weaker origins than their reputations suggest, and a practical way to choose between them.

The two methods in one paragraph each

Pomodoro means 25 minutes of single-task work followed by a five-minute break, with a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes after the fourth round. It came out of Francesco Cirillo's student habits in the late 1980s. He experimented with intervals between roughly 5 and 30 minutes and kept 25 because it suited him. The 52/17 method means 52 minutes of work followed by 17 minutes away from the desk. It comes from a 2014 analysis published by DeskTime, a time-tracking company, which looked at the top 10% of its users by the app's own productivity rating and reported the average work-to-break pattern in that group. There is no long-standing practice around it, no rules about interruptions, and no book. It is a ratio that got popular.

How much the origins are worth

Neither number is a scientific result, and it is worth being precise about the difference in their weaknesses.

Cirillo never claimed 25 was optimal. He arrived at it by trying things and presents it as a starting value to adjust. That is honest, and it means the technique never depended on the number being special.

The 52/17 figure is described more confidently than it deserves. The DeskTime analysis was correlational and its sample was self-selected: people who installed time-tracking software, ranked by a proprietary productivity score inside that software. It cannot tell you whether the pattern caused the ranking or the other way around, and it cannot tell you what would happen if someone with different work adopted the ratio. DeskTime later revised the number upward with more data, which is what happens to a statistic that describes a shifting population rather than an underlying mechanism.

When you compare the two, you are comparing two conventions. Pick on fit, not provenance.

What the trial says about strict intervals

The one randomized head-to-head test in this area is Smits, Wenzel and de Bruin (2025, Behavioral Sciences), with 94 students in two-hour study sessions. It compared self-regulated breaks, strict Pomodoro, and Flowtime, where you work until attention drops and then break. Strict Pomodoro produced faster-rising fatigue. Both structured conditions showed motivation declining faster than self-regulated breaks. Nothing separated the conditions on productivity, task completion or flow.

That result does not say timers are useless. It says the structure is not buying you output, so the reason to use one has to be something else. Making a start cheaper is the main one, and enforcing breaks you would otherwise skip is the other. It also suggests that rigidly obeying a short interval on work that is going well has a cost, which is the most common complaint about 25 minutes and the reason people go looking for a longer block in the first place.

Which one suits which work

Warm-up cost is the deciding factor

Ask how long it takes you to get properly into the task. Writing an argument, debugging unfamiliar code, or reading a dense paper often needs eight to twelve minutes before anything useful happens. A 25-minute block spends a large fraction of itself on that ramp and then ends. A 52-minute block amortizes it. Work with a short ramp, like clearing an inbox, marking assignments or filling a form, loses nothing to short blocks.

Resistance pushes the other way

The shorter interval is better at getting you started. Committing to 52 minutes of something you have been avoiding for a week is a real decision; committing to 25 is barely one. If the problem is beginning rather than sustaining, the short block wins even on work with a long ramp, and you can extend once you are moving.

Interruptions favor short blocks

In an environment where someone talks to you every half hour, a 52-minute block mostly produces broken 52-minute blocks. Short blocks finish before the next interruption. If you can defend a long stretch, the longer interval is usually the better use of it.

The 17-minute break is not a rounding error

Seventeen minutes is long enough to leave the building, cook something, or start a conversation you cannot easily exit. Some people find that restorative and some find it is where the afternoon quietly ends. If you use the long break, decide beforehand what it is for. A walk is a good default; opening a feed is not.

A middle option and how to test

50/10 sits between the two and is easier to fit into a calendar full of meetings on the hour. Nothing about 52 is better than 50, and the tidier number means you are more likely to actually run it. Test one interval per week and judge it on two things: how many blocks you completed without breaking the rule, and whether you were still willing to start one in the afternoon. Feeling is a poor measure here, because a long block that went badly feels more virtuous than a short one that went fine.

There is no reason to be loyal to one ratio. A reasonable setup is short blocks for administrative work and errands you postpone, long blocks for the project that matters, and no timer at all when the work is already carrying you. Frequently asked questions

Is 52/17 scientifically proven?

No. It comes from a company's analysis of its own users' tracked time, ranked by that company's productivity score. It is correlational and the sample selected itself. The number was later revised upward with more data.

Which one is better for studying?

Can I just work until I lose focus instead?

That is Flowtime, and it performed as well as both structured conditions in the 2025 trial while producing less fatigue than strict Pomodoro. It asks more of your self-awareness and it does not force breaks, which is exactly the failure mode timers exist to prevent.

Do I have to take the full 17 minutes?

No, but do not cut it to two. A break too short to get you away from the screen does not deliver the attention reset that makes the next block worthwhile. If 17 minutes derails your afternoon, run 50/10 instead of trimming 17 down to 5.

Which should I try first?

Start with the shorter interval if your problem is getting started, and the longer one if your problem is that you finally get going right as the timer rings. Then adjust in ten-minute steps after a full week.
